“I’ll be Your Friend”, “Bring Down the Walls”, “I Go Back”, “Tears”, “Can you Feel It”… It’s no exaggeration to state that Robert Owens has been involved with some of the greatest house classics ever released. He has remained active as a vocalist over the years collaborating with producers like Photek, Cold Cut and Atjazz. Now Dublin remixers, producers and DJ duo, Jet Project, have teamed up with Robert Owens for the single “Say the Word”, which is out now on Snatch! Records. “Say the Word” will also appear on their upcoming album So fly due out in September 2012.
“Say the Word” is a 3 track single, with Snatch! label boss Riva Starr and label mate Joyce Muniz on remix duties.
The original mixes retro 90′s synth lines, a classic 909 house beat and Robert Owens’ inimitable voice to create a modern version of a monster house anthem. Soulful, mysterious, simultaneously jumping and laid back–all the hallmarks are there. T-Bone and JMX of Jet Project have obviously taken their history lessons seriously and have the skill to create a classic.
The remixes take off from the Jet Project’s point of inspiration to other musical territories. Riva Starr strips the track down to a squelchy bassline and Robert Owens’ voice creating loops of sound that are deep and basstastic. Joyce Muniz also deconstructs the track, she uses only bits and pieces of the vocal and a treble-laden melody reminiscent of the one used on “Bring Down the Walls” as a motif, which has significance considering Robert Owens’ involvement.
An all-around great release. I am looking forward to the relase of their album So Fly in September. Until then, check out the sampler available on soundcloud:
