Listen: The Alchemist – Flight Confirmation 0

Back when I was copping the Source week in, week out (circa early 2001, before it was The Sauce), I remember they were giving out their end of year awards (it was 2001 I think). Producer of the year went to Timbaland, Dr. Dre, and this young, white dude named The Alchemist. Eminem was already huge, so the white thing wasn’t such a shock, but what was shocking was how simple and hard his beats were, often using a single sample with simple, jazz-inspired inspiration to create something hauntingly bounceable. That was the case when he did Prodigy’s “Keep it Thoro” (still my absolute favorite Alchemist song), and it’s the case again with his latest, “Flight Confirmation.” Alchemist keeps the spirit of DJ Premier alive with horn-heavy samples and old-school breaks, while Danny Brown and Schoolboy Q rock old-school rhymes until a Russian jazz singer takes us away in a very interesting coda. Some fires just don’t go out. The Alchemist’s Russian Roulette album drops on Decon July 17th.

I believe you can never really know a person until you smell them. Until that day, you’ll just have to know that I like it when my ears vibrate in fun ways, and I like it when it’s time to eat. I don't eat small round things, and I don't eat big hairy things. I don’t like fancy pants and I don’t like ugly children. I only run when I need the toilet. If I could live anywhere, I’d live in a sock. Stay away from me if you’re itchy.
